About Future Farming Mōhua
Future Farming Mohua, led by Miriam Sherratt, empowers rangatahi from Golden Bay to get hands-on, real-world farming skills rooted in their place. It’s for Year 11–13 ākonga who want to learn outdoors, grow their confidence, and connect with the land they live on. Nelson App
Raised in Golden Bay, Miriam came home to build opportunities she wished she’d had growing up. After studying environmental science and biology, working in applied education, and leading Papa Taiao, she brought her passion and experience into creating this programme for her community. What ākonga do (and learn):
Work outside in farming & agricultural practices: they’ve already had experience with beekeeping, soil testing, milking, seed-drill driving, effluent management. Nelson App
Learn locally relevant skills: fencing, predator control, forestry, sheep care, animal husbandry. Nelson App
Get connected with local farmers & contractors: seeing what farming looks like in their own backyard, learning how skills = tino useful in real work. Nelson App
Why Future Farming Mohua matters:
It offers a different pathway for youth who might not thrive in traditional classroom settings, giving them action, purpose, and tangible skills. Nelson App
Builds confidence and a mindset of care — for land, soil, animals, and community. Ākonga are developing communication, understanding practical responsibility, and seeing how their mahi matters. Nelson App
Because it’s local and relevant — what students learn is connected to Golden Bay’s land, environment, and farming way of life, not abstract.
