With longer days and warming weather, Golden Bay’s hospitality and tourism operators are getting ready to welcome a fresh wave of visitors for the 2025/2026 summer season.
At the heart of the action is The Drift Café & Eco-Lodge in Pākawau, where owners Mere and Josh Walters are giving the seaside spot a spruce-up ahead of the summer rush. “We’ve had a steady stream of locals through winter, but summer brings a different kind of energy,” said Mere. “People come here to slow down, enjoy the view, and reconnect – and we love being part of that.”
The couple has spent the cooler months refreshing guest cabins with locally crafted furniture, repainting the café’s deck, and partnering with nearby producers to expand their menu. This season, The Drift will feature Golden Bay honey in its smoothies, local cheeses on the platters, and freshly caught fish from Collingwood.
Josh, who also runs kayak tours from the beach out front, says demand is already picking up. “We’ve had bookings coming in from as far as Germany and Canada. Word’s really getting out about how special this place is.”
To celebrate the start of the season, The Drift will host a ‘Welcome Back Weekend’ on Saturday 9 November, featuring live music, woodfired pizzas, and sunset paddle sessions. “It’s our way of saying thanks to the community that keeps us going,” said Mere. “Everyone’s welcome – whether you’re here for a night or a lifetime.”
Golden Bay Promotion Association chair Hemi Tait said it’s shaping up to be one of the region’s busiest summers yet. “Accommodation bookings are strong, and the feedback from local operators is really positive. There’s a great buzz in the Bay right now.”
For visitors heading over the hill, the message from locals is simple: come prepared, book ahead, and take your time. With its laid-back charm and passionate small businesses, Golden Bay is ready to shine once again under the summer sun.
