About Save Our Springs
Te Waikoropupū Springs, nestled in the heart of Mohua (Golden Bay) at the top of New Zealand’s South Island, are not just a natural wonder – they’re a sacred treasure. Boasting some of the clearest water on Earth, these springs are revered as tapu (sacred) by Māori and cherished by Pakeha and international visitors alike. However, this pristine ecosystem now faces an unprecedented threat.
The Save Our Springs (SOS) campaign is rallying supporters to defend Te Waikoropupū against the looming dangers posed by the government’s Fast-Track Approvals Bill. This legislation threatens to bypass the existing Te Waikoropupū Water Conservation Order, potentially opening the door to destructive development – including a proposed gold mining operation at nearby Sam’s Creek.
The stakes couldn’t be higher. The planned mine would essentially be an arsenic mine, with ore processing taking place in the Upper Takaka Valley. This process involves crushing rock to a fine powder and using a cyanide-laced chemical mixture to extract gold, posing severe risks to the delicate ecosystem of the springs and surrounding waterways.
For seven years, SOS has been at the forefront of protecting Te Waikoropupū. Our grassroots movement has united passionate individuals, scientists, and community leaders in a shared mission to preserve this natural wonder for future generations. We’ve raised awareness through educational initiatives, lobbied decision-makers, and supported critical research into the springs’ unique ecosystem – including the microscopic creatures that play a vital role in maintaining water clarity.
Now, we need your help more than ever. By joining our campaign, you’ll become part of a dedicated community working to:
Oppose the Fast-Track Approvals Bill and its potential to undermine existing protections
Raise awareness about the ecological importance of Te Waikoropupū Springs
Support scientific research and monitoring of the springs’ ecosystem
Advocate for sustainable development practices that respect the cultural and environmental significance of the area
Together, we can ensure that the crystal-clear waters of Te Waikoropupū continue to flow, unspoiled, for generations to come. Join us in becoming a guardian of this sacred place – because some treasures are simply too precious to lose.
